Howdy Aggie Moms!!                     August 2008

Congratulations! You are the “proudest mom” of a son or daughter who has been accepted to, attends, or has graduated from Texas A&M University. The University has a lot of wonderful people and resources and the Federation of Aggie Mothers Clubs is the umbrella under which the Katy/West Houston Aggie Moms’ Club and 125 other clubs in Texas and other states operate.

The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Aggie Moms’ Club is to help you connect with the University and to bridge the gap between home and college for you and your student. Our Katy/West Houston Club has been in operation since 1993. We hold monthly meetings at which we have guest speaker programs from the University faculty or staff, or from students of various campus organizations. These guest speakers inform us about different Texas A&M activities, resources, and traditions.

We hold our meetings on: the 1 stThursday of the month @7:00 pm (except January, July, and August). The meeting place is at Living Word Lutheran Church located at 3700 South Mason Rd, near the intersection of Mason Road and Westheimer Parkway. From I-10, go south on Mason Road, turn right on Westheimer Parkway, the church building is on the left, (our meeting room door faces Westheimer Parkway).

We would love to have you join us this year. Our first General Meeting of this year is: September 4 th. We will have membership applications available at this meeting. Also we have the Membership form available on our website, and if you would prefer, mail it with your dues to Emma Lipperdt at the address on the form. We are asking that all membership forms and dues be returned by the October 4 th General Meeting so that we can have a directory ready for you to pick up at the November 6 thGeneral Meeting.

Did you know that Aggie Moms have their own Aggie Mom Weekend Retreat/Fish Camp? This camp is similar to the camp that freshmen “fish” and transfer students attend. All moms, guardians, grandmothers, (not just new Aggie moms), are invited to attend the weekend retreat. Each year it is held in College Station on an away (football) game weekend. I have been a camp counselor for several years and I assure you that you will have a wonderful time! So mark your calendars for November 14-16, 2008. Come have fun, learn traditions, see some great entertainment, hear informative speakers, and make new Aggie Mom friendships. Oh, did I mention that you will be spending some time with your Aggie at the banquet Saturday night! Registration forms for camp can be found online at www.aggiemoms.org. (P.S.-We will be camping at the Hilton again, with catered meals, lovely rooms, and so close to campus---how wonderful!)

Our club will be again participating in Winter-in-Aggieland Bazaar in the Memorial Student Center (MSC) in College Station on November 13-14.  Our Ways & Means Committee will be selling Aggie items at the Bazaar as well as at our General Monthly Meetings.  Items sold at our meetings can be purchased with cash or check.  These Aggie items may be perfect for that special occasion such as an Aggie’s birthday, graduation, or just a special treat for an Aggie of any age.  We have a wide assortment of items: ring crest seals, embroidered hand towels and aprons, ironwork pieces, pewter, and many other things.  Some of these items are pictured on our website.  The money raised by the Ways & Means committee is used to fund our scholarships and our donations to TAMU organizations and clubs. Chris McCaslin and Margaret King will be glad to show you our Ways & Means items.

Grocery Rebates: We raise money in addition through the rebate programs with Kroger and Randall’s. We receive a certain percentage through the purchase price of our groceries. At the September General Meeting the procedure for how we can sign up will be explained. Once we sign up, they will send us a check at the end of each quarter! Kathleen Wilburn will be telling you all about it.

Care Packages: A great tradition of our club is the Care Package: We provide a great way of showing our Aggie how we “care” about them at the students’ hectic pre-finals time with our Fall and Spring Care Packages. Tondi Branch will be showing you the Fall Care Package item and starting to take orders on Sept 4 th. The form will be on the website.

Hotline: Katy/West Houston has a hotline! It is so convenient for our Aggie Moms to get the latest info about our club by calling 281-394-8108. Call this number any time to find out what is happening or what is coming up. Ann Coker will have magnets to give away with the hotline phone # on it.

Website: Don’t forget to visit our website for a great amount of information on: Officers and Committee names/ phone numbers/emails, info on upcoming events, Calendar, General Meeting Minutes & Newsletters, Photos, Ways & Means Boutique, Recipes, Membership, Scholarship, Aggie Brags & News, announcements, and forms to download.
